Mulan: The Post-Feminist Princess

Image
"Let's get down to business to defeat the Huns" Words every child of the 1990s can't help but sing along to;  Mulan  (1998) is one of Disney's most famous creations. Based on the Chinese legend of Hua Mulan, it tells the story of a young girl struggling with finding a place for herself in a patriarchal society that dictates that her only role in life should be that of the perfect daughter, wife and mother. Mulan is clumsy and struggles with fitting into the role laid out for her; so, when the time comes for her father, who is old and frail, to be conscripted to the Chinese army to fight the Huns, Mulan takes his place, joins the army and trains to fight – all the while pretending to be a man. Post-feminism, while not particularly popular amongst academics, can be drawn upon in order to analyse  Mulan.  Some believe post-feminism to mean that ...

A Love Letter to Marvel

Image
There is so much to say about this huge franchise, from the detail and the depth of character, to the time spent on creating these masterpieces, that where to even start is baffling. I will forever and always love Marvel, their comics, their characters and their universe. While I am a fan of DC, I feel that they came much too late to the game of this generation of movies to be able to compete – throwing years’ worth of information into one 2-hour movie does not constitute an in depth backstory. Sorry, guys. Anyway. The Marvel Cinematic Universe is the true recipient of this expression of love, because in my excitement over the release of Captain America: Civil War – which is absolutely incredible – I re-watched every movie in the MCU, and loved every second. From the moment Robert Downey Jr. appeared on our screens as Tony Stark (Genius, Billionaire, Playboy, Philanthropist) I have been enamoured. Eagerly awaited the next release, gladly queued up to go and treasured every single...

Life Lessons TV Has Taught Me...Part Two

Image
Last time, I wrote about some of the more serious advice I've taken from my favourite shows; this time, I'm writing about things that sometimes seem insignificant but actually mean a lot, especially when you're a fan of TV, breakfast foods and crying... There are two kinds of people. “The only people in the universe who have never seen Star Wars are the characters in Star Wars and that's cause they lived them Ted, that's cause they lived the Star Wars.” How I Met Your Mother, 4x01 We’ve all heard this before, but when you think about it, it gets a little worrying how easy it is to divide the human race up. People who love Star Wars and people who have never seen it (because that’s the only way a dislike of the franchise is possible); those who believe in the supernatural and those who don’t; people who cover their chips in sauce (ugh) and those who have it on the side (as it should be); and even those who believe in love at first sight and people...

Life Lessons TV Has Taught Me...Part 1

Image
TV is a massive part of my life and as such I probably get most of my advice from it...these are some of the more serious things I've taken from it and try to life my life by. Running away from your problems doesn’t end well. “You can run away from your problems, but you’re just gonna find new ones that pop up.” New Girl, 1x16 New Girl has taught us many lessons since it began airing, but honestly, if it’s taught me anything it’s that you can run away from all your problems but they will, without a doubt, come back to haunt you. Whether it’s something you know needs to be said but you avoid it and avoid it until it just comes bursting out, or procrastinating with uni work and leaving it all until the day before; it’s just going to come back with a vengeance isn’t it? So, the life lesson here: deal with the things that are thrown at you, you’re gonna come out the other side of it feeling better, knowing that this thing can’t eat away at you anymore. Take thi...

Top 5 Comedy Shows to Binge Watch

Image
Binge watching is not a difficult thing to do these days, believe me, so why not make a list of the shows that are particularly easy to binge on? I think it’s very easy to binge watch anything now, but picking your next endeavour can be difficult. I think that there are certain things to look for before making that decision; storylines that don’t get boring, a cast that you can fall in love with, and characters that take you on a journey with them. Because there are so many different shows, and many different genres to delve into, I settled on just choosing the comedies I thought would be perfect for binge watching. It was a struggle to narrow it down, but these shows are the comedies that I think are easy to get swept up in, easy to watch and incredibly easy binge on (and, as always, some of my favourite gifs to go along with them).  5. The IT Crowd  Set in the offices of Reynholm Industries, The IT Crowd revolves around the three members of the IT department; ...

Fictional Deaths I Will Never Recover From

Image
There are a lot to choose from, given that I get attached to characters rather quickly, and this was incredibly difficult to write because a) I am very emotional when it comes to my fictional characters, b) I had to pause to cry in between and c) I had a lot more than this on my list and it took some narrowing down. These are the ones I know I’ll never recover from… 10.  Fili and Kili – The Hobbit This should not have gotten to me as much as it did. This book and series of films contained lots of action and even lots of death towards the end and even though I knew it was coming, watching them die hurt. A lot. The whole sequence of events; to make Kili and Thorin watch as Fili is suspended over the rocky ruins of Ravenhill, impaled and then brutally dropped to the ground before the remaining members of his family. Kili, after seeing his brother so violently murdered, attacks the orcs in rage and eventually  faces Bolg; the fight is rough but he ultimately saves Ta...
